Event Photos: Tania McCartney’s Book Launch

    Posted in: Projects

On Sunday, I was Event Photographer for local self-published success story, Tania McCartney who was launching the second children’s picture book in her Riley series – Riley and the Dancing Lion.

Product Photos: Poppy, Bean and Bloss

    Posted in: Projects

I recently had the pleasure of taking some Product Photos for Michelle from Poppy, Bean and Bloss.

It was a lot of fun to pose the toys and dolls, and to capture their gorgeous personalities on film.

Michelle makes all of the toys herself, with many many hours of handsewing going into each one and she sells them through local markets (here in Canberra) as well as online at her webstore.

    Poppy, Bean and Bloss

She first started making sock monkeys in 2007 and each one is hand-crafted from a single pair of socks. Michelle says: I may use the same style of sock more than once but your monkey will be unique as all faces are hand embroidered, guaranteeing that no two monkeys are the same.

    Event Photos: Canberra’s Handmade Market

    Posted in: Projects

Handmade Market on the weekend was absolutely fantastic – again! So many wonderful stalls and so well organised – thanks Julie. It was stinking hot (38.9 Celcius) but the people of Canberra still came in their thousands.

I was the “official photographer” for the event and I have posted a CD off to Julie with about 150 images on it. You can see a few here in this post, and check the Event Photography page for even more.

    Handmade Market - Nov 09

[above: Rachel from Little Angel, Little Devil]

As you know, I usually have my own stall at this market, selling my RED INSTEAD handmade things but I recently decided to wind that business up and concentrate on my new venture – which is graphic design, web design and photography. I had quite a few of the stallholders asking me if I was sad not to be having a stall and I could honestly say no – I’ve made the right decision. I’m so excited to follow this new path.

    Handmade Market - Nov 09

It was so great to be involved in the market in a different way and I loved helping Julie and the team out behind the scenes. As well as taking photos, I did other helping jobs like refilling the toilet paper in the loos (someone has to do it!) and handed out Christmas cheer to all the stall holders in the form of sweet-smelling gingerbread men. They all loved them and it was a welcome sugar hit for the afternoon on Saturday.

    Handmade Market - Nov 09

For once, I actually got to check out all the stalls and there is so much wonderfulness in Canberra – it makes me so proud of us! I never get the chance to have more than a quick look at the stalls on my way to the toilet or something and to be able to actually see everyone was so great.

As of November 2009, I'm ready for a new phase in my life. I still love to sew and really enjoy making things with my hands but I'm not going to do it as a business any more. I am going to make design my focus again, and move the sewing back to personal time.

Right now you can save 20% off everything in my indie clothing and accessories online store: www.redinstead.com.au/handmade
